The Umbwe route is the most challenging and steepest ascent on Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches from the south and offers a direct, dramatic ridge climb. Due to its steep elevation gain, it is recommended for experienced hikers who acclimatize quickly.
Trek through rainforest, steep climb. Stay at Umbwe Cave Camp. 5-6 hours.
Trek out of forest into moorland, join main trail at Barranco. 4-5 hours.
Scramble up Barranco Wall, short acclimatization day. 4-5 hours.
Trek through alpine desert to base camp. 4-5 hours.
Summit climb to Uhuru Peak, long descent to Mweka Camp. 12-15 hours.
Descent to gate, certificates, transfer to hotel. 3-4 hours.
