About Lake Manyara National Park

Tucked at the foot of the Great Rift Valley's western escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is a compact, scenic gem. The park is dominated by its shallow alkaline lake, which covers up to two-thirds of the park's area depending on the season. Ground-water forests, grassy floodplains, and rocky cliffs combine to make this one of the most ecologically diverse parks in the country.

Wildlife of the Lake Manyara National Park — What Animals Will I See?

The park is famous for its unique tree-climbing lions, a behavior rarely observed elsewhere. It is also home to Africa's largest concentration of olive baboons, herds of elephants, hippos at the Maji Moto hot springs, giraffes, leopards, and large flocks of lesser flamingos that feed on the lake's algae.

The Unique Tree-Climbing Lion Behavior

There is no major migration in Lake Manyara. Instead, its compact size and permanent water sources sustain a resident wildlife population year-round, supplemented by migratory waterbirds that fly in from other Rift Valley lakes.

Best Time to Visit Lake Manyara National Park

The seasonal cycles significantly affect animal movements and foliage visibility. Here is a month-by-month guide:

June - October

Dry season. Best for viewing mammals as they gather near water sources.

November - May
