Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

Start with a very steep climb through the moss-draped forest ridge to Umbwe Cave.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
Altitude Gain 2,850m to 3,900m

Zone / Terrain Moorland Ridge

Trek along a narrow rocky ridge, emerging out of the forest into giant groundsels and lobelias.

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp via Barranco Wall
Altitude Gain 3,900m to 3,995m

Scramble the Barranco Wall and hike down and up to Karanga Camp.

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Fitness Requirements and Difficulty

Extremely Difficult. The steep elevation gain on Day 1 & 2 increases the risk of altitude sickness. Only recommended for highly experienced trekkers who acclimatize rapidly. Success rate is roughly 70-75%.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, it is a non-technical trek, meaning no ropes or climbing harnesses are required. However, it is very steep and has sections with high exposure, requiring good balance.

The rapid elevation gain in the first two days (climbing from 1,600m to 3,900m) does not follow the "climb high, sleep low" rule, giving the body less time to adapt.

To support safety and carry gear, we maintain a ratio of 3 to 4 porters per climber.
