About Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is a scenic haven of giants, located in northern Tanzania. Famous for its massive ancient baobab trees and enormous elephant herds, the park is named after the Tarangire River, which flows through the park. This river is the lifeblood of the entire ecosystem, serving as the sole permanent water source for wildlife in the region during the dry season.

Wildlife of the Tarangire National Park — What Animals Will I See?

Tarangire is famous for hosting some of the largest elephant herds in East Africa, sometimes numbering up to 300 individuals. It is also home to dry-country antelopes like the greater and lesser kudu, fringe-eared oryx, and gerenuk. Predators include healthy populations of lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs. Over 550 bird species make Tarangire a premier birding destination.

The Dry-Season Baobab Elephant Migration

During the dry season (July to November), Tarangire experiences a mini-migration. Thousands of zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles travel from the surrounding Maasai Steppe to gather along the Tarangire River. When the rains start in November, the migratory animals disperse back to the open plains.

Best Time to Visit Tarangire National Park

The seasonal cycles significantly affect animal movements and foliage visibility. Here is a month-by-month guide:

July - November

Peak dry season. Wildlife congregates along the riverbed, providing unmatched game viewing.

December - March

Green and lush. Elephants are still plentiful, and bird watching is excellent.

April - May

Main wet season. High grasses make wildlife spotting more challenging, but the scenery is beautiful.
