Located just a short drive from Arusha town, Arusha National Park is the perfect gateway destination. Despite its small size, it features three distinct landscapes: Mount Meru (Tanzania's second-highest peak), the green Ngurdoto Crater, and the shallow, alkaline Momella Lakes, all framed by views of Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day.
The park is the best place in northern Tanzania to see the striking black-and-white colobus monkey. Giraffes, zebras, warthogs, waterbucks, bushbucks, and leopards are common, but there are no lions and very few elephants. Momella Lakes host thousands of flamingos and waterbirds.
Arusha National Park has a stable resident wildlife population due to its permanent lakes and forested mountains, with no migratory herds.
The seasonal cycles significantly affect animal movements and foliage visibility. Here is a month-by-month guide:
The park has a pleasant, mild climate.
Dry season, offering the clearest views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.
Rain seasons, bringing rich greenery and migratory birds.
A series of seven alkaline lakes, popular for canoeing and flamingo viewing.
A mini-caldera surrounded by dense rainforest, often called "Little Ngorongoro".
The dominant volcanic peak, offering excellent hiking trails and waterfalls.
Year-round (June to October offers clear skies with spectacular views of Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro).
