Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Altitude Gain 1,860m to 2,700m
Trek Distance 8 km

Trek through the beautiful lower rain forest zone. Quiet paths and fresh mountain air.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Altitude Gain 2,700m to 3,720m
Trek Distance 12 km
Zone / Terrain Moorland

Hike through the heather and moorland zones, enjoying clear vistas of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Altitude Gain 3,720m to 4,300m (and back to 3,720m)

Zone / Terrain Moorland Ridge

Hike up to Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi Ridge (4,300m) for acclimatization before descending back to Horombo for a hot meal and rest.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Trek through the bleak alpine desert, passing the last water point on Kibo Saddle to reach Kibo Hut base.

Day 5: Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak down to Horombo Hut

Summit attempt begins at midnight. Scramble up the steep gravel scree to the rim at Gillman's and push to Uhuru Peak. Descend back to Kibo and Horombo.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Trek Distance 20 km
Zone / Terrain Rain Forest

Final descent through rain forest. Collect certificates at Marangu Gate, celebrate with the porter crew, and transfer back to Arusha.

The addition of the acclimatization day at Horombo Hut makes this route highly accessible to average hikers. The difficulty is moderate, and the success rate is around 80%. Normal cardio workouts and weekend hikes are sufficient preparation.

Best Time to Climb

January-March and June-October. Huts make this route viable during the short wet season of November and long wet season of April-May.
