Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Trek through the lush, dense rain forest canopy. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and vibrant bird life.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Altitude Gain 2,700m to 3,720m
Trek Distance 12 km
Zone / Terrain Moorland

Leave the forest zone behind and enter the open moorland, offering views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Altitude Gain 3,720m to 4,700m

Cross the high-altitude saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo into the alpine desert. Early dinner and sleep to prepare for the summit run.

Day 4: Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak down to Horombo Hut

A steady descent down through the moorland and forest. Collect your summit certificates at the gate office and transfer back to Arusha.

Fitness Requirements and Difficulty

While Marangu is often perceived as the "easiest" route due to its gentle slope, the short 5-day duration gives very little time for altitude acclimatization. Summit success rates are around 65-70%. We recommend this route only for fit individuals with previous experience sleeping at altitude.

Best Time to Climb

Available year-round, but January-March and June-October offer dry, clear climbing windows. The A-frame huts provide excellent shelter, making Marangu the preferred route during the rainy seasons (April-May and November).

Frequently Asked Questions

Five days is the absolute minimum duration allowed for Kilimanjaro. It carries a higher risk of altitude-related symptoms due to the rapid ascent rate. If time allows, we strongly recommend booking the 6-day version.

On the Marangu Route, you sleep in shared, wooden A-frame huts equipped with mattresses and solar lighting. You do not sleep in camping tents.

Yes, we provide high-quality gear rentals including four-season sleeping bags, trekking poles, down jackets, and gaiters at our Arusha base office.

We recommend carrying 3-4 liters of water in your daypack. Porters will carry your main luggage, but you are responsible for carrying your daily hydration.
